LOVE YOUR MOTHER // Eleanor Ford

Let’s face it, design, wellness and ritual is a great doorway for connection, understanding and dialogue, right? And we are all seeking community and the support that it brings to the various roles we take on in life.  In any case I want Appetite for Decoration to be an open community and platform for conscious brands and artisans, not just a retail salon/destination or blog of shiny content. Something deeper, stronger, longer…

The fourth interview in the LOVE YOUR MOTHER series is with Eleanor Ford, Creative Director and Maker of awesome accessories brand, SOLLIS Jewellery. Eleanor is deft at combining a kaleidoscope of materials and influences to make elegant, fun and sculptural jewellery you’ll want to wear forever.

Eleanor has lived and worked across the globe and this layering of influences has become evident in each collection. In fact, layering has become a SOLLIS signature and it’s what I love most about her work; each piece a beauty in its own right, becomes something completely different altogether when layered. #appetitefordecorationsayslayer Eleanor now based in Sydney and with her second babe on the way, answered the questions so we can get to know her better. Why do you do what you do?

Simple answer, I LOVE making things! If you get down to my true essence as a person, I am a maker. Be it jewellery, art, sewing fancy dress costumes for my boy or cooking. I love working with my hands to create things.

What do you do when you’re not in the FLOW with your work?

Something practical and useful like hanging out the laundry or watering the plants. That way your mind is cleared by focusing on a mundane task and you also get a small sense of achievement from having done something useful.

IMG_4906IMG_1614How do you relax, relieve stress?

Go to the beach, I love to be near the sea. Or wine works pretty well too.

Who inspired you on this creative path?

I guess it was my parents, I spent most of my childhood building crazy contraptions in my Dad’s shed (and yes he let me use all the proper tools when I was little and yes there were a few bloody fingers but I survived) or inside cooking and sewing with my Mum.

Favorite artist? What is it that you love about their work?

There are a few but I always come back to Henri Matisse. Not sure why, I just love the beauty of his work.

What are you reading currently?

I’m going through a modern classics phase.. currently reading Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

IMG_4910IMG_0245What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

To buy some land in the countryside and get some goats.

Food from the gods?

Cheese, salami and wine make me extremely happy, but being 7 months pregnant.. it’s all about chocolate, dark chocolate and at least 70% cocoa. No crap please!

Guilty pleasure?

Really good chocolate.

Early bird or Night owl?

Usually I would say early bird but having a 3 year old and another one on the way, I will take any sleep I can get at the moment!

Boss tunes?

Anything New Orleans style Jazz, especially The Meters, Trombone Shorty, Dr John the list goes on and on..
