modern mythology

the mythological, elegant and energetic tapestries designed by famed finnish illustrator klaus haapaniemi and mia wallenius stood out amongst the super slick aesthetic shown by established and sons at milan design week just gone. the mammoth tapestry, meteor ottoman and volcano rug combine age-old techniques  – they’re made using a 15th century craft and mythology with a modern twist. these super-fun and folkloric tapestries are high on colour and drama – the volcano rug references last year’s ash cloud chaos in milan and also made it onto this years infamous established & sons canvas tote bag. you will find much animalia amongst the mythological mix including sea monsters, flying fish, pterodactyls and mammoths of course. this continued international effort in reviving traditional techniques and methods in great modern design means folklore comes up trumps. get with it and myth it.

in 2010 haapaniemi and wallenius set up mk house  – here they focus on crafting textiles with luxurious materials, combining traditional methods with modern prints inspired by nordic nature and folklore. klaus is a leading finnish illustrator and sought after designer having worked with stella mccartney, d & g, selfridges and disney. mia is a creative consultant, she has worked as senior art director for the gucci group and was the visual director for the hel yes! pop-up exhibition and restaurant which promoted design and food as part of london design festival 2010.
