visits to the v & a always require a pit stop in their cafe as the tiles and other wonder wall decorations here in the morris, gamble and poynter rooms are as worthy as the current exhibitions on show in my mind. these three rooms formed the first museum cafe in the world and were intended as a showpiece of modern design, craftsmanship and manufacture. the combinations of colour, texture, relief and style is what gets me excited as my blurry images below suggest. sorry bout that, but you get the goodness right? a very good excuse to see them in the flesh is the upcoming v & a late on the 24th june: afropolitans – an evening exploring african photography, fashion, style and identity – which i am incredibly excited about. amongst much beauty on the night you will discover serious shake it sounds from a current favourite of mine – spoek mathambo and his first uk performance alongside dj vamanos of the sexual secousse and upcycled north african interior genius from hassan hajaj. there are workshops as part of the programme too – don’t miss the chance to explore black masculinity in portraiture with my friend and brilliant photographer othello de sousa – get in quick for tickets.
